(PharmaNewsWire.Com, May 19, 2017 ) An infantile spasm is a particular type of seizure found in an epilepsy syndrome of infancy and childhood. It is also known as a West syndrome. The onset of infantile spasm is usually found in the first year of life between four months and eight months of age. The condition constitutes 2% of childhood epilepsies and 25% of epilepsies with onset in the first year of life. There are around 2,000-4,000 new cases observed in the US each year. The overall long-term prognosis for infantile spasms patients is poor. It has been found that 50%-70% of infantile spasms patients develop other seizure types and 18%-50% will develop Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) or other forms of symptomatic generalized epilepsy.
