(PharmaNewsWire.Com, February 10, 2017 ) Blood pressure monitoring devices are used to measure the amount of blood pumped by the heart. They operate based on the oscillometric principle. In this, pulsation pressure is measured via an occluding cuff placed on the left arm at the brachial artery (major artery in the upper arm), which is connected to an air pressure sensor and pump. The pressure in the cuff is inflated until the typical systolic value is reached and then slowly deflated. The pressure changes due to ventricular contraction and the readings are used to calculate heartbeat rate.
