(PharmaNewsWire.Com, February 22, 2017 ) Heart valves are prosthetic cardiovascular medical devices used to replace a defective heart valve. They can be biological, tissue or mechanical. Manufacturers develop mechanical heart valves from synthetic materials such as pyrolytic carbon, titanium alloy, and cobalt-based alloys and tissue heart valves from bovine, porcine, and human tissues. They also develop transcatheter heart valves with a combination of tissue and synthetic materials. Devices developed using human tissues are known as allografts or homografts. Medical personnel implant transcatheter heart valves through the transfemoral approach (via the femoral artery) and transapical approach (via a small chest incision). Medical facilities worldwide perform about 300,000 heart valve replacement procedures each year.
