St Olav Eye Clinic treats AMD - Makuladegenerasjon
(PharmaNewsWire.Com, January 04, 2017 ) Tonsberg, Norway -- This is an opportunity to partake in the extensive research at the Chinese eye hospital. This is a university hospital of traditional Chinese medicine combined with Western medicine, and all hospitals attached to universities are required to do research, says Erik Vinje Olbjorn, who is part owner of the St. Olav Eye Clinic in Tonsberg.
A Nordic cooperation
Beijing Eye Hospital applied to the Chinese State Administration for permission to open a branch in Norway. It was rejected at first, due to the rather chilly political climate between Norway and China. The Eye Hospital expanded the agreement to cover Scandinavia, and this time the permission was granted.
The State Administration in China would like Chinese medicine to be known around the world, and encourages the university hospitals to connect with foreign colleagues. The branch in Norway will give our hospital recognition, Vice President Li Jing at Beijing Eye Hospital says.
We have included other acupuncturists from Scandianavia in this agreement, so clearly it is a Nordic cooperation, Erik Vinje Olbjorn says.
Research Co-owner and general manager of the St Olav Eye clinic in Tonsberg, Ole Jorgen Frydenlund is also acupuncturist, and have been visiting the mentors in Beijing with Olbjorn many times. These visits have been for educational purposes, and one of the mentors is Professor Liang Lina, who is an ophthalmologist with her education from the US as well as a doctor in traditional Chinese medicine. Professor Liang is in charge of a number of completed and ongoing researches, which mainly concerns ophthalmology and Chinese medicine - also direct studies on acupuncture for diseases of the eye.
In Norway, the need for this kind of research in this particular area is huge. It doesn't exist here. With the Chinese resources we are now included in their research, and that is good news for our patients and also our profession, says Olbjorn and Frydenlund.
Patient trips to Beijing The agreement with Beijing Eye Hospital will also benefit the patients at St. Olav Eye Clinic as they can travel to Beijing and be patients at the Chinese hospital. The quality of the treatment is very high and very intensive.
We have already organized two trips, one in October 2015 and in August 2016. We brought seven to eight patients both times, and they were all very happy about the treatments and the results, says Olbjorn.
We are planning a new trip in the spring, and several of these patients will join us, and even some new ones. We plan at least two trips for the patients a year, and doctors and acupuncturists from Beijing Eye Hospital will come to Norway to share their expertise.
Needles for the eye Acupuncture is well known to be effective to relieve pain and stress. I have worked with acupuncture for eye problems for 15 years, and have found that patients who would otherwise become blind or is visually impaired can retain enough eyesight to keep doing what they like to do - like reading, knitting and crosswords, Erik Vinje Olbjorn says.
Acupuncture can have a positive effect in many diseases of the eye, and particularly age-related disorders. We must emphasize that acupuncture does not cure diseases but can help maintain stability and halt development.
In Norway it is not allowed to claim that the needles can cure, but we hope that the Norwegian-Chinese research should be able to substantiate what we and our patients are experiencing: That it works.
